We've all been sharpened by years of peer abuse guidance.

There, fixed that for you...

Yeah, that's one thing I like about GDNet - just how active it is. I find MSDN forums to be quite slow, and you are lucky to get responses at all (except the XNA forums, which I occasionally poke around on). With GameDev.net, you've got a place to post pretty much anything (within reason) and your chances of having a somewhat respectable conversation on the subject is quite high. Mind you, most of the big lounge threads usually devolve into a bunch of bantering about politics or religion, but that is still probably better than nothing.

And luckily restricted to the lounge usually.

I know all about this!

I intentionally flame-broiled several threads recently using religious/political nonsense. I hope that I never have to do a repeat performance for the bigots, but surely pigs will fly before bigotry goes extinct. Like Sisyphus, I am doomed to continue a losing battle until the day I die. Actually, I only kid about the gloominess -- I love messing with bigots while I rock out with my Sennheisers. ;)

P.S. A firey horse-lion "ROWR HISS ROWR" to y'all bigot folk! :)

P.P.S. I have learned like 25% or more of the math I know from gamedev.net. The site is invaluable, period. I will contribute one day, I promise.

On the flip side, I really like StackOverflow for more answer-oriented discussion.
SlimDX | Ventspace Blog | Twitter | Diverse teams make better games. I am currently hiring capable C++ engine developers in Baltimore, MD.

GD is very good both in terms of people being helpful, but also from sheer number of people visiting. However many other sites are good. I've found Ogre & wxWidgets to be good for instance. And while it's not a forum per se, StackOverflow is awesome... except not so much for game development as more general programming questions.

I agree with this. Mostly because of it's ability to separate and highlight the best answers than the quality of the posts on each.

Quote: GDNet is the New York of forums to me. It has it's share of assholes, but said assholes seem to really know their stuff. I wonder if it's just a personality one develops after so many years in the industry?

what makes you think the assholes in new york know their stuff? Just because there are more knowledgeable assholes in new york doesn't mean their population has a higher percentage of knowledgeable assholes.

Then again, maybe I've seen too much jersey shore.

There's gonna be a stackexchange subsite for everything. Just see here.

Yeah, I've definitely found StackOverflow to be helpful as well (at least when looking up solutions to problems... I can't say I've posted anything there yet, at least that I recall). I think that if I were to spend all my time over there though, I'd miss the interesting discussions that happen here. For me, that's the biggest reason I frequent GameDev.net - the interesting discussions on a variety of topics.
