Bear arms.

(Seriously, this was what I assumed zedz meant, and not the other thing that's all serious-y.)

I will admit that I haven't read the whole bible lately, but I'm fairly sure I would have remembered a line that went like "Thou shalt always carry a fully automatic firearm with armour piercing rounds, and none shall have right to take it from you."


Actually, thinking back on it, I can't recall all that much about carrying weapons in the New Testament, but I do recall many parts that go against actually using violence. I really should dig out a copy of the bible and read it cover to cover again. (And I'm betting it is something more actual Christians should do themselves.)

Almost everything on the internet is automatically assumed to be American by default, and you invariably get meatheads who are so sure that the rest of the world is identical to the US because they're too stupid/lazy to know otherwise. In a less abrasive way, that's kind of what I was getting at. Dysfunctional as we are, GD members are towards the high end of the educational and intelligence spectrums so it seems weird not that people like these debates, but that they are guilty of not looking outside the US. I always thought it was a stereotype applicable only to people called "Chuck" but it really seems even the educated are brainwashed to believe "America Best".


I think it simply boils down to the fact that the official language of Gamedev is English. After that it's just a matter of comparative population sizes between English speaking countries. There are more Americans than British, Canadians, Aussies, Kiwis and Irish combined. I suppose there area few English speaking countries in Africa and there are English speakers in India too, but there aren't as many members here from those places. That said, there are a lot of meatheads in the US who think the rest of the world is just like the US.

The "god given right" thing begins with the US Declaration of Independence "We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness ..." In recent years this passage has been popularly interpreted to claim that rights come from God. For example, George W. Bush pushed the notion in several speeches. What Jefferson elucidated as natural rights have become supernatural rights. From this it follows that the rights specified in the US Constitution come from God. Funny though, you don't hear many people talking up their "god given right" to be free of unreasonable search and seizure, or their "god given right" to due process or their "god given right" to remain silent or their "god given right" to counsel...

To get vaguely back on track, there's very little I would take up arms (in a literal sense) for. About the only thing I can think of is some sort of oppressive occupation, (France in WW2, Ireland in the early 20th century). I'd like to think I'd have the courage to join a resistance if that happened either in NZ (where I live) or in Ireland (where my family is).

Almost anything else (infringements on rights, etc) aside from already happening, is better fought with civil disobedience, protest, letters to representatives, etc. But I guess eventually, for everyone

I have to fight to get my fire alarms to shut up, when they run out of batteries in the middle of the night. If someone removed the requirement for fire alarms, I'd send them flowers, not take up arms against them.
