I guess most non-Americans are smart enough to stay out of those kinds of discussions. I know I am.
As for taking up arms, well, I'd do it if the zombie apocalypse comes. I have a few swords I'd like to try out [evil].

Almost everything on the internet is automatically assumed to be American by default, and you invariably get meatheads who are so sure that the rest of the world is identical to the US because they're too stupid/lazy to know otherwise. Mostly found on low-grade forums with a collective IQ much lower than that of GDNet.
Back on topic: I would take up arms to protect my planet against an alien invasion. No joke - if a bunch of shape-shifting lizards come down with Star Trek phaser guns and X Wings, we're basically fucked so what have we got to lose? Sit and watch Trisha while the planet is blown up? Some chavs would.

Going all Wolverines style in the mountains would be fun, but the possibility of invasion of the US is ridiculous.

I posed this question to my friends last week.
If your government was to ban something what would it be that would make you take up arms and fight for it back (or leave the country)?
To stop everyone saying "freedom of speech" im adding a rule - it must be tangible.
My choices are
The internet
Heavy metal.
The government has already done a lot more horrible things than taking away your internet and music and I assume you didn't take up arms then. To take up arms over heavy metal would be pretty rediculous.
Every single day that I watch the news I am completely amazed that people arnt taking up arms all over the place. In all honesty I think 99% of people wouldnt take up arms for ANYTHING, other than someone coming to their house to physically harm them or their family.

Oh and to answer the question... it's not a subject I've ever thought about. I suppose if someone attacked me or my wife or broke into our house I might fight them, but that's instinctive. I can't conceive I'd ever go on some gun-toting rampage; to me it's laughable anyone in a civilised country would really consider that a realistic option. Peaceful protests, maybe.
The people who want to take your freedoms and rights away couldn't be happier that peaceful demonstrations are somehow considered the highest/most respectable form of protest these days.
I know I wouldn't take up arms if my government told me to do so. That's somewhat standing in the way of my US citizenship. The application requires you to swear you'll take up arms if told to do so.
You either believe that within your society more individuals are good than evil, and that by protecting the freedom of individuals within that society you will end up with a society that is as fair as possible, or you believe that within your society more individuals are evil than good, and that by limiting the freedom of individuals within that society you will end up with a society that is as fair as possible.

So are you going to Swear it? Or are you going to quit all what that society has achieved thanks (in part) to those who took arms for them?
You can swear that you'll take arms if the time comes, but nobody is making you swear that you'll shoot someone with them. That's what the freedom argument there is all about.
I think the spirit is to be willing to die for what you love, more than to kill for it.
