... My father leaves tomorrow on a 10 day trip to the Azores. Going back to the old country for a spell...

I'm azorian :), born and raised in São Miguel.

Most of the Portuguese in the USA originally came from the Azores. My great-grandparents came here from Pico, Flores and Terceira in the 1890's.

BTW, a lot of people seem to forget that Portugal is listed as one of the top 3 teams of all time. (FIFA site) Carlos Queiroz is an ass if is starts to change the team.

Good luck handling Brazil. I told my dad to expect everyone in the Azores to be watching the game Friday afternoon.

Here's a bit of irony. Because NK played well against Brazil, the regime there decided to broadcast the game against Portugal live: North Korea TV viewers see World Cup loss. "I'm sure the players will have to go though extreme re-education and self-criticism."

France on the other hand...

Schadenfreude is such an ugly word for something that feels so good. [grin] It almost makes me believe in karma.

I'm off to Paris today. I hope this débâcle won't stop bars from showing the other World Cup matches. I can imagine they've seen enough. :/

Good luck to England, Algeria, Slovenia, Team USA, Germany, Ghana, Australia and Serbia!
\o/

Much better England performance there, thats what we wanted to see. A few more goals would have been nice but hey, a win is a win.

Well done USA as well, talk about leaving it to the last moment there!

Go USA! With this kind of a game England's going to end up like Napoleon at Waterloo. Except that it's football and Napoleon is dead. As are also, apparently, the French in general. Way to go.
USA almost got screwed again. Does the world just not want to see the USA love the sport? :(
I assuming you are talking about the first half 'goal' which was given offside?

Those marginal calls are always hard; sometimes they go for you sometimes they go against.. such is the game.

If he had been offside and it was called then it was a brilliant call.
If he hadn't been offside and it was called then it was a bad one.

Such is the nature of the game and they are always worse when they happen to you.

Except there is a specific rule stating, when in doubt, give it to the attacking player. I agree that he was a foot away from being brilliant, but these guys should be the best refs the world has. It's really a shame when referees can decide the game so easily and people will just say "oh, its ok, it happens".
