What phrases should I be looking for to do this in preparation for A.I.?

I have a 3D map and I wish to automatically fill it with nodes (of a fixed distance apart) that an A.I. controlled object can move to. What sort of algorithm should I be using? I'm very much new to A.I. and don't really have a grip on the terminology yet so apologies if this is really obvious.
"pathfinding automatic navigation graph node generation" should give you a start.
