The title sums it up pretty nice :) Wondering about this as i'm digging into animation of game characters (2D). What is the ideal number of frames for a run loop? The same as "the game itself", say 30, or is it better to use lesser frames. If the latter, will it look better or worse? Would be grateful for any answer :)
Fewer frames is better. 8, 10, or 12 are reasonable numbers for highly detailed art, and 4 or 6 would be fine for less detailed art.

Just to provide an example, here's a 12-frame jogging animation I made (warning female nudity). For any animated gif, if you right-click on it and look at the image properties it says how many frames it is.

I want to help design a "sandpark" MMO. Optional interactive story with quests and deeply characterized NPCs, plus sandbox elements like player-craftable housing and lots of other crafting. If you are starting a design of this type, please PM me. I also love pet-breeding games.
