Spam lists

3 days ago I created a spoof email address to play a practical joke on a friend (he's a medium level executive and he mentioned on his twitter account that he's looking for poeple to apply for a key account manager's position. So I made up a rather suitable candidate and had him apply for the job). So far I've gotten two emails on this new account (on live.co.uk), both of which are outright spam for a missis Ritson in Brighton. I got the first one a day after I created the account and I did not use the email address for anything other than to send that solitary letter. Although to be honest, I did rather enjoy the second email, which said:

1 x Finest Enchanted Broaderie Anglaise Duvet, Kingsize
(Dispatched. Updated Thursday 17 December 2009)
Next day delivery from Tesco *love*. Too bad I don't live in Brighton. On a serious note, how the heck do spam lists work, that they can include your completely fresh email address (granted, in a not-so-cryptic format of "abab1978", where a and b are different letters and 1978 is a different number) the next day?
