Exporting models with animations in 3DS format

Hi, I am new to the whole "modeling and animating assets" thing, I am using 3DS Max 9, so far I was able to model static objects, export them to 3ds format and view them on an engine I am working on. I read that the 3ds format supports animations based on keyframes, so as a simple test I made a very simple bouncing ball animation on MAX, I exported it to 3ds format and loaded it to the parser of my engine, however when I read the the number of frames of the file I always get the value of 100 despite setting the number to 50 in MAX, also I am unable to see the transformations for the animations. Is there some step I am missing on 3DS Max? Something like committing the animation to the mesh and then exporting? Thanks in advance.
