Just wanted to add one thing about practice... Practice not only helps you get better, but it will also help you run into common mistakes and learn to avoid them in the future. You can't really avoid these mistakes by trying to learn tricks or advanced techniques first, so it's better to get them out of the way early on when you're first learning the basics.
Once you really understand modeling inside and out, you'll be the one writing your own tips and tricks, while using other people's tips to help strengthen your own skill set.

On irc.freenode.net, as I said. Freenode is the home to a lot of open-source or programmer-related things, like Blender, Python, XKCD, etc.
You'll need an IRC client, like X-Chat (or mIRC if you're on Windows). And I think you'll need to have a registered nick to be able to speak in #blender; when you log on you'll be instructed how to do that.
