My eye is naturally drawn towards the empty space between the A and the S (since the A is usually sloping away from the S). My eye immediately focuses on the center of those two letters, so immediately I see "AS", but just a little to the right my eye picks up another S, and so I quickly read "ASS" before reminding myself that there is a Y too. Anyway, I'm just saying I'm finding it hard not to pick out ASS every time I read it. I like the color scheme and the fonts, but I'm with Konidias. What if you just called it Yet Another Space Shooter? You could do something like this (of course with cool fonts and effects and whatnot):
Yet Another
Space Shooter
so that the dominant part of the name is "Space Shooter". Your players would probably just refer to the game as "Space Shooter," but even if they did refer to it as YASS, at least your logo isn't shouting ASS. That's my 2¢ :)
Feedback on game logo please

If you're that worried about a long name, you're nowhere near setting a record... look at these:
The Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth II: Rise of the Witch King
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: The Manhattan Project
...
... and the gem :-)
Yes, these are some really (terribly) long names of computer games. But you must admit, that the choices you made just there (except the last one, which I don't know) have some big branding accompanied with the title, so e.g. the first part of TMNT III is really easy to remember and to recognize by the addressed audience.
Anyway, that ass aspect seem to be really a problem. I must admit that I hadn't seen it that harsh. This might come from my native language, which is German. And until now I hadn't thought about any similar words in German (with ass=arsch, YARSCH looks quite a bit like arsch...)
What I don't like about the long version (without having tried it recently), is that is missing the "BAAAM" effect. It's like Grand Theft Auto, everybody is talking about "BAAAM" GTA! Three letters and everything said. With our four letters I imagine a similar effect (except the size of the "BAAAM").
BTW: in UK/USA is GTA a often used term in tv / papers?
When I get the time tomorrow, I will try the stars and a full blown version. Thanks for your remarks, keep 'em coming :)

In the USA, GTA is often used when talking about the video game, but I have never seen it used when talking about real life grand theft auto.

Thanks to your critique, we (speak the dev-team) got rid of the ASS asspect and went for the full blown version. I'm really satisfied with the result. Please see the first post for the logo.

I think you nailed it (got it just right) with the very top one. Reminds me of the Wing Commander series. And that is a Good Thing.
Good Luck.
Good Luck.
I agree, the full text logo is looking far better than the others.
One thing I'm not liking too much is the "YET ANOTHER" part. It's either the darker text or the fuzzy edges or something but it's not looking as crisp as the rest of the logo. I think if you sharpened the edges and maybe tried a lighter inner color it might look a tad better.
I know you're probably using a different look with that part as to keep it less noticeable from the SPACE SHOOTER part... I just think it could use a little bit of tweaking to not look so blurred.
