Feedback on game logo please
Hi all,
I'm most of my day a programmer and not really educated in design topics.
So, please, any feedback :)
Edit 2: 99% final logo
Plus the extracted symbol, to be used as icon:
Edit: Some newer stuff:
Version 2
Version 3
Version 4
Version 5
This was the first but now also obsolete logo:

1. What is the game called? What will the players call it? "Yass"? Does it stand for something or is it a made-up word?
2. Why is the spade so important? Is it a card game?
Sure you've made something pretty, but in this day and age, people tend to design logos to suit what their company does, or what their games are about. I'm not a designer, but from my understanding, designers don't make things up and then conjure up a reasoning for what it means (artists do though!).
If you were going for something pretty then I guess you've managed to meet that goal.

Thanks for your reply, and sorry for not adding something more detail.
The letters originate from the wonderful game title "Yet Another Space Shooter" (edit: the players will likely call this YASS, as it's quite long). The game is a 3D FPS and space shooter, you can look here for some progress: http://www.yass-engine.de (page in english)
Some time ago I tried the designers way, as you call it. Basically I tried to create a space ship with the four letters. The result was quite horrible. So then I tried the artist way and saw the spade pop up.
I'm happy that I managed to get something, which is not only with my eyes pretty.
The spade has some meanings associated (from tarot), which are e.g.
Swords (intellect; education) Air.
SPADES are your Power cards.
The card of change.
Spades refers to past, present and future- specifically careers, Change, and the Circle of Life.
This is a bit esoteric, but thats another topic.

Let see...
I think the spade angle is inappropriate because spades have nothing to do with the game (because it is not a card game) and it confuses the reading of the S's.
The future-y underline and bright colors are good; anything to read "speed", "bright" and "high tech" works for you.
Your title has the word "ass" in it, which is really unfortunate -- to make this not stand out, you should have the Y match the other letters rather than smaller and set down a bit.
So I'd say drop the tangents about working some symbolism into your logo and just do some bright, bombastic, techy-looking block letters. If you want fancy, you could probably find some more elaborate science-fiction themed font to use.

Well, you got the point, I think.
The ass is really a bad thing residing within that name. But changing the name is probably more complicated than changing the logo (it's the name of that project for 5 years now :) )
I tried something with another arrangement / font, but similar colors:

yea the second one appeals to me (a gamer not a programmer) and sets the image in my head that this is some kind of space game before i even know the plot of your game. I like the color scheme maybe you should put some stars off the top corner of the Y to kinda dazzle it a little like these *** in a triangle form or like the subaru logo seen here
http://www.wssoc.org/html/images/adver%20spnsr%20logos/subaru2.jpg
besides that i do like it. gj what program are you using to design that?

I really like that idea and will soon try it.

Plain Photoshop with some free fonts.
Here are some more versions, if you like, you can visit our forum and discuss it in detail, but I will also step by here, to see if there is something.
EDIT: you probably need this link to do this :)

Version 5 looks a little bit overloaded to me. In my opinion the versions 3 & 4 look more SciFi, but I think a version in silver looks better.
Yeah I'm sorry... all I'm seeing is ASS ASS ASS ASS.
Really, who decided to use that name? I'd rather you called it Yet Another Space Shooter.
It's not really that long of a name. It's only 22 letters. That's less than most people's first and last name.
If you're that worried about a long name, you're nowhere near setting a record... look at these:
The Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth II: Rise of the Witch King
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: The Manhattan Project
LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures
Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix
Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People Episode 5: 8-bit is Enough
and this gem:
Just saying... I'd be less concerned with length, and more concerned with the ASS aspect.
