I suck at GUIs and HUDs
Hey all,
Anyone able to offer some advice? I've got a little puzzle game up and running and the end result is very good looking for something with free art.
The problem is: How to design the in-game GUI?
I need a way to present the following information: Restart, Quit or Main Menu and Mute / Unmute.
I could make three different buttons and squeeze them in a corner. I could create a drop down menu and have the options there. I could create little icons and have them represent everything.
The problem is, I don't have the talent to make those look good from scratch.
Can anyone give some pointers or point me to a starting point on what they think would work best?
I really appreciate it guys. Thanks. :)
Have a look at the following page:

I found the icons very useful. You could use a 'refresh' icon (like those used in browsers) for the restart button, an 'x' icon for exit and a 'home' icon for main menue. You could also show tooltips when the cursor is over the icons.
For more complex tasks I can recommend Real-DRAW Pro. The presets make it very easy to create good looking art.

Take a look at webdesign tutorials, there're lot of web-gui step-by-step PS tutorials showing you how to make buttons, frames etc. I.e. take a look at http://www.empiredezign.com/, maybe you will find some style or inspiration which will suite your imagination of a working GUI.
