Build me a sweet speaker system for $1000

I probably spend 10-15 hours a week watching movies or TV at home. Most of that takes place on a projector I have hooked up to an old desktop PC in my living room (probably soon to be displaced by my new Macbook, which is much quieter). The projector experience is awesome for movies and games--I'll probably never buy a big TV--but my sound system is sad. I'm currently just using a $150 set of Creative surround speakers hooked to the computer by three 1/8" stereo jacks. It works pretty well for games, but for content like movies where I need to understand quiet dialog, it's just not getting the job done. So all you cheap audiophiles, help me! I want to put together a decent 5.1 system with a reasonable receiver for around $500-$1000. Any recommendations on brands, models, or places to look for great deals? Any general recommendations about what kind of speakers to get?
This is the set I recently purchased. I'm quite happy with it.
