Hi, I'm nostalgic of my old atari st sounds. Are there some good programs to compose chiptune musics and sounds ? One working on Linux would be great. Is there a special file format ? Do libs exist to replay them from a game ? for Java or C++. Thanks for any clue !
If you are not limited to Linux only, check out Renoise 2.0 (which is available for Linux, though) and ReFX's QuadraSID VSTi plugin (which is PC/MAC only). It's closer to the C64 than to the Atari ST, obviously, but I haven't heard a better plugin for chip sounds so far.

I have tried various 8bit VSTi's like peach, magical64 etc. but none of them had expressive arpeggiated sounds. Does any one have a recommendation?

Thanks, Renoise looks great, I'll try to learn it !

Now a fun thing would be do be able to 'draw' curves to create unique samples. Are there any VST plugins that would allow that and run on linux ?
You could check out www.8bc.org - theres a load of Creative Commons licensed chiptune there which, if you can get permission from the owner, you will be able to use. Make sure your understand the CC license on a song before you start using it, though.

My page with my music on it is here:

Also, you can draw your own waveform in Renoise. I forget the details, but I know its a pretty basic feature of it.
There is simply a "draw" button. I was just too lazy to even look at the whole screen before asking. Thanks for the indication, and another nice bookmark.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned trackers.
I think Renoise is one :)
I use Renoise to write music!

It's the best tracker ever!

Hi everybody,

You can see and download all 8bit VST plugins existing on Web, on my webpage :
http://woolyss.com/chipmusic-plugins.php

Freewares mainly ! Few VSTi are rare today... but downloadable on this page.
Many infos too (composers, players, netlabels, chiptunes to download...)!

If you are interested by trackers.
See this resource : http://woolyss.com/tracking.php
Many, many, many links !!!

Renoise is the best I know. It's works on Linux Ubuntu very well.;)

Thank you.
