Have a look at Geoff's homepage, www.lupinegames.com , he wrote some articles on this topic.

Also, make sure to check out the Reference section here at GDNet. We have some stuff on isometric and other tile based games.

IsometriX (http://www.multimania.com/hatti/MrY/isoxeng.html) is about the best place currently for isometric links. (naturally GameDev will be the best place for isometric info at some point in the future, but for now, it is IsometriX)

i also used to have my own webpage with isometric tuts that i wrote (http://argo.acronet.net/~cherokee/isohex/) I no longer maintain it, but the tuts are still there. (eventually those articles will be brought over to gamedev).

also, there's Ridge 6444 (http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Ridge/6444/) (mr. Hughes has linked to this forum, so this returns the favor)

SO, there's a lot of stuff out there.

What I'd REALLY like to do is sit down over coffee with folks like Jim Adams, Dino Gambone, Jim Hughes, and Geoff and hash out some technical articles about isometric and hexagonal tilebased algorithms with them. Alas, this is unlikely to occur. (but BOY we would make a kick ass article)

Get off my lawn!

Just my two cents.....hexagonal kicks major ass!!
But what if he wanted general ass kicking? Would be out of luck eh? 8^)

I am interested in creating a 2d tilebased RPG. I am curious what are some of the pros and cons of using Isometric, or Hex based tiling...and how I might start to program the algos for it..or sources where I can find out...
Talk to ya later.
