[java] Java on PlayStation 2
Have a look at
http://www.javaworld.com/jw-06-2001/jw-0608-idgns-playstation.html
Do you think it will make things go faster for a java gaming API or for the java game industry ?
We has discussed about a java gaming API for more than a week now in another thread and my question is : what sort of API will Sony use for the development of games on the PS2 ? Maybe Merlin JDK1.4 or a PS2 dedicated API, or even the Java Gaming API currently in specification process...
I doubt Sony will use JDK1.4. Java is not there yet in terms of performance.
Due to the memory restrictions consoles have I would bet they build on a sliced and diced version of j2me.

I can''t remeber the URL where I saw this first but there is an port of J2SE for 32Mb StrongARM devices (like PDAs etc) that was announced at the JavaOne conference this year (last week in fact).
Have a look : http://www.savaje.com
So it sounds like it is possible to have J2SE on PS2 (or even any 32mb device because it takes only 4Mb for the JVM to load its own core classes).
