Windows 2000 Professional and Games?
Does anyone know a lot about Windows 2000 Professional and if it will support all the games that Windows 98 does. Windows ME is not a choice since it is the worse OS ever, it is far worse than 98. anyway, any help on Windows 2000 Professional will be much appreciated. I''m thinking of upgrading, so please help if you can.
Thanks
I definitely recommend getting it.
Sure some games don''t work, but if you them so badly install Win98 as well and have a dual boot system.
Win2K, well, damn it be good. No more crashes everyday. And awesome for programming since buggy applications are less likely to take down the whole system. Go for it, won''t hurt to try.

BetaShare - Run Your Beta Right!
I run all the games I play on Windows 2000; it has OpenGL support, as well as DirectX 7 & 8 (NT4 supports up to 5 or 6)
You can''t play some of the older games, like Wing Commander Armada, or Comanche - but you can play all the Windows based games.

It''s worked with every game I''ve tried except one, Might and Magic VII. They put out a (really hard to find, it''s buried on the FTP server without any links) patch to fix MM7''s WinNT/Win2K problems though. I''m still waiting to get a new CDROM to replay it though
(it''s a pretty good game).

When Windows 2000 first came out, there were quite a few games that did not work. Each compatibility upgrade released by Microsoft allowed more games to work on Windows 2000. These days, if a newly released game does not work on Windows 2000, then there is something wrong with the developer. I believe the main reason that some games did not work was because the developer had taken shortcuts or made assumptions about how certain things worked and these assumptions did not hold true for Windows 2000.
Nowadays, games compatibility is not an issue unless you want to run some old games that are no longer maintained by their developers.

I definitely agree with what was said above. Games run beautifully in Win2k.

ReactOS - an Open-source operating system compatible with Windows NT apps and drivers
The only thing stopping me is the fact that I''d have to reinstall everything I currently use on 98 on 2K, and that''s just a pain in the ass I can live without. It would be nice if 2K detected everything currently installed on 98 and just carbon-copied it over to however it handles app installs.
Oh really, i was told that I could just upgrade from windows ME to 2000 without having to lose anything and your saying that i would have to reinstall everything. Ummmm, that makes me wonder b/c i donot know. Does anyone else have info on this?

You get 2 options when installing Win2K Pro.
1. Upgrade OS - This upgrade the current OS* to Windows 2000, and keeps all configuration details. The old OS* will be obliterated.
2. Clean Install - This installs Win2K uneffecting the other OS*, and puts your system into a dual boot system. It doesn''t wipe your HD, but you''ll have to configure Win2K to find your programs, and configure your desktop etc...
Oh, and if you go for a Clean Install, DO NOT USE THE NTFS, as Win9x/ME won''t work with this.
*( btw, when I said OS above, I meant other versions of windows )

If you have 128mb of ram or less prepare for a perfomance hit if you upgrade to win2k. Its a nasty resource hog, but otherwise quite nice.
