Hello all. I''d like to introduce myself to the group. My name is Phillip and I have just barely begun to get my feet wet in game programming. I currently work as a database programmer using MS Visual FoxPro and Visual Basic but my first PC language was C. I started programming when I was 12 on a Commodore 64, anyone remember those? After the Commodore blew up I didn''t own a computer for years until I finally bought my first PC about 8 years ago. After going down the hardware technician path I finally decided that what I really wanted to do was develop software so I taught mysef C and then jumped over to the FoxPro/VB side because at the time I felt the learning curve for C database programming was too steep. Lately I''ve decided to give a go at game programming. Realisticly I don''t plan on ever getting into the industry; It will most likely remain a hobby, but I do feel it''s a great way to keep your mind sharp for any kind of programming. Writing code for games and such seem to require one to be much more clever than just making office applications. Well, here is where I am: My C skills are a little rusty as I haven''t used it in several years. I have bought and read "Windows Game Programming For Dummies" and about 1/3 of "Tricks of the Windows Game Programming Gurus", both of which I feel are great books. I finally started college a couple months ago at age 28, (Should have gone 10 years ago, but stuff happens.) and majoring in computer science. I think there is much to be learned this way despite the fact that I''ve always been one to learn on my own. Sorry this is so long. This looks to be a great group and I look forward to reading it. Thanks for listining, Phillip
Cool! I am 25 and going to college right now to just started a year ago! I am not going to get a B.S. in CS though. I want an B.S. in IS. CS degrees don''t pay anymore money and I can do what I want to do with a IS degree. I will have Calculus done this summer. I am going to take Physics which is also important to game coding. Anyway I am still learning C++ and have one semester of C++ done at college. I want to code games for a job someday. I had an c64,c64c,c128D, and a Amiga500! So yea I do remember those good old days! =) I had a tape drive at first on my c64! No disk drive what a joke! I will be moving after I get my A.S. in Applications programming next year to either Seattle or Phoenix. I want a job coding and will continue on with my school for a B.S. in IS then. Good Luck!
