I have a Win2K machine, with seperate Win2K partitions for dev tools and screwing around (aka doing websites, playing games, talking on icq, etc). In technical terms, Black and White ran alright for me on my fairly modern system (AMD 850, 256MB RAM, 16x DVD, UltraDMA 100 hard drive etc). Of course this could be because i got bored of the game after a few nights of attempting to get even the slightest enjoyment out of it. Your not missing a lot by not being able to play it, and I have heard tonnes of horror stories about B&W crashing, losing saved games, and being buggier than an Ultima game.

I agree with the above, this really sounds like a problem where your computer heats up majorly (games are so demanding) and then starts locking up.

I dont know why youre all having problems with BNW. Ive been playing it for close to a month and have had a grand total of 2 crashes (both mem address accidents). Plus, my save/load times are around 2 mins on islands like island 3 in the single player.

WIN2k
AMD Athlon 900
256MB PC133
ATI XPert 2000

Having said that, it is probably your vid card. My friend used to have a bad GeForce 1 and it would do some pretty crazy stuff (i.e. random lockups in some games, inverting color pallette, random reboots, etc.). You''d be well advised to check and see how well the fan on the gpu works, and if it works fine, play a game till it crashes and feel how hot the gpu is. If it''s excessively hot, then its on its last legs. If its cool, and the fan works, try someone else''s vid card in your comp and see how it runs with that. Dont forget to toss the drivers of the old card before installing.

If all of that fails, youll probably have to get someone to check it out. None of us can give a really detailed set of possibilities without actually messing around with your comp.

good luck

With regards to BW specifically, and not ur problem with the overheating or whatever, it seems Win2K users are getting the best luck with BW. Mainly cuz Win2K doenst let it do idiotic stuff and leak all over the place.

The reasons why Black & White has so many damn bugs and crashes all the time:

POOR TESTING!

1. Lionhead did all testing in-house. IMHO, poor judgement.
2. Lionhead never released a demo to the public. IMHO, bad.
3. Lionhead never release a demo-test to the public. IMHO, also bad.

If you try to keep a game hidden, and never get any feedback from the
public, it''s going to bomb.
Computer Specs:

AMD Atlon 500 Mhz
128mb ram
Nvidia TNT2 32mb
Win 98

As you can see my computer is not as good as the ones here. But my comp seems to run B&W just fine I dont think I have ever crashed, but I also dont really play it alot. I dont think it is fair that your are blaming the company that made it because a few people have problems, while hundreds of other people seem to be able to make B&W work just fine.
You could try to use someone else''s RAM, for testing ...
For me it worked well... My RAM was crap!

BTW: BnW runs fine on my comp (but slowly)
