I've been trying to hunt down a decent terrain editor the past few day's. The problem is that most of them are usually trial version's, which I can't afford to spend 40$ just to make one terrain for my game. Could anyone point me to some good free tool's I could use? Thanks!
L3DT is amazing for large terrains

Terragen is also a popular choice.

I've been doing some work using Spring recently, L3DT has been my terrain editor of choice. Combine it with Photshop and you can create some really exciting terrain.
You can use Nem's Terrain Editor, it's free. I forget what you can export to though.
Unfortunately, the site is down, but it was at http://nemesis.thewavelength.net

The L3DT editor is good but it has a limit on the size you can make on the free version, you have to pay to be able to go to a bigger size.
L3DT does have a cap on te free version (2048 i think) but you can export multiple maps as textures and then splice them together in Photoshop. It's not ideal but it works.
