In the story:
Worcester didn't choose to go to the Albatross.
At the end of high school, students take an exam that determines
the location of their next phase. While the Albatross was a very
rare destination, it was not one of the places he wanted to be.
Some of his classmates were envious. Some of them said that the
Albatross was a deadend. There was nothing exciting coming from
the Albatross. It was just watching over a dead land. It must be
a very really boring place.
While he showed enthusiasm about the assignment before his friends,
he knew that he was disappointed. The new environment was no
doubt spacious. This allowed some interesting chats with his friends.
But after awhile, it got old and the distance started to take a toll
on the friendships. Each of them got busy and there was less and
less common experience to share.
Worcester never liked looking out of the Albatross at night, because
when he looked outside, it reminded him of an oil painting, where
a lighthouse watched over a sea that had no ship. This made him stay
at the workshop.
He would take apart old equipment. At first he would just take them
apart to recycle them. Then he started saving the parts that were
intact. After that, he started fixing some of them and making things
out of the salvaged parts. Sometimes he would fall asleep in the
workshop.
He dreamed that there was a person. That person wore a white cape.
It rode on a white camel across starlight reflected by the frozen
ground. It was wandering, and watching over something in the sky.
