Worcester

In the story:

Worcester didn't choose to go to the Albatross.

At the end of high school, students take an exam that determines
the location of their next phase. While the Albatross was a very
rare destination, it was not one of the places he wanted to be.

Some of his classmates were envious. Some of them said that the
Albatross was a deadend. There was nothing exciting coming from
the Albatross. It was just watching over a dead land. It must be
a very really boring place.

While he showed enthusiasm about the assignment before his friends,
he knew that he was disappointed. The new environment was no
doubt spacious. This allowed some interesting chats with his friends.
But after awhile, it got old and the distance started to take a toll
on the friendships. Each of them got busy and there was less and
less common experience to share.

Worcester never liked looking out of the Albatross at night, because
when he looked outside, it reminded him of an oil painting, where
a lighthouse watched over a sea that had no ship. This made him stay
at the workshop.

He would take apart old equipment. At first he would just take them
apart to recycle them. Then he started saving the parts that were
intact. After that, he started fixing some of them and making things
out of the salvaged parts. Sometimes he would fall asleep in the
workshop.

He dreamed that there was a person. That person wore a white cape.
It rode on a white camel across starlight reflected by the frozen
ground. It was wandering, and watching over something in the sky.
The Mess Hall

[ Mess Hall (Image) ]

The mess hall of Albatross is the upper most deck of the inner
capsule. The sky, the control tower, the wings, and the outer
capsule are all visible from the mess hall. The capsules absorb
light to adjust interior brightness.

There are three ways to get to the mess hall. From the elevator of
the main tower. From the stairs connecting to the mid level habitat
ring. Or by flying above the canopy of the inner capsule.

The kitchen is part of the tower structure. A bar sits between the
kitchen and the extended deck. In the middle of extended area is
a performance area, beyond which are multimedia projectors.

During the mission the projects relays maps, weather information,
the position data of the flight crew and ground crew, and news
of the colonies.

Since Albatross has no bartender, the bar is self-served. The
performance area is retracted when not in use. It leaves an
open area on the deck that people could see the vegetation below.
The map of the area below the Albatross is sometimes projected
in the stage carvity.

In the story:

Romaina was a Border Patrol interceptor. She chased spaceships trespassing
the border, immobilized them and brought them to the station. Sometimes the
chase ends at the lower orbit or on Earth. Those never end well.

Some people trespass the border to scavenge from orbital debris. But in doing
so they often put the satellites of the moon in danger. Some were trying to
steal weapons orbiting with the debirs. Some people tried to sneak back to
Earth because they were delusional. They could not believe that Earth was dead.

It was a very dangerous task. When the pursued eject debris, they meant to
destroy to the interceptors. Interceptors like Romaina could have died many
times. But they don't, because they highly skilled, highly equiped and highly
cognizant of the situations.

An urban legend claims that the equipment used by the interceptors employ
highly advanced technologies or even alien technologies hidden from the public.
This result from numerous eye witness accounts where the interceptors dodged
or neutralized deadly assualts, passing through walls, and defying physical
laws. As a result, in the underworld, there are bounties on capturing or
destroying interceptors, either on the orbit, or on the Moon. Interceptors hide
their identities to protect themselves.

Not all of flight crew were interceptors. Sapphirina and Vermilia were not
interceptors, and they did not know that Romaina was an interceptor. Amber
was also an interceptor, but Amber and Romaina where in different divisions
and did not know that the identity of the other. Granola was not an interceptor
but she knew that Romaina was. Crouton does not know the original divisions
of the flight crew members.
