whell you can always get older versions of software on ebay
etc...
for instance photohop 3.x ...
it requires MUCH less RAM, is fast as hell, you can concentrate
on your work....
the only thing you miss is a fancy interface and some stupid
plugins that you cant keep apart and give up searching and
do it manually..

3dsMAX 2.x still rules for many many things... its also
very fast and doesnt use up 1000000mb ram as the new version..

infact ive been using the new photoshop and 3dsmax4
sinultaniouly but i rather concentrate on working with the tools
i have instead of waiting all the time, working slow,
having a complicated interface (which slows down everything in
the first place) etc etc..

still maya rules though (i never really got used to softimage

btw a real artist can work with any tool you give him
...almost... :D

Null, I know that europeans typically use decimals instead of commas. I was wondering if it got confusing with the "real" decimal and the european one. Or am I completely wrong and they use a comma in the place of a US decimal.

15.002 - fifteen point zero zero two
15.002 - fifteen thousand and two
15,000 - fifteen point zero zero two

Which is it?

This is difficult and I am not blindly saying that because a product sells for a
lot of money then it is justified. But we have been using this thing for over two
years now and we have *never* had to go to another product because of it's power.

I am glad we paid a lot of money for this thing. Why? Because it deserves it. The Intel
analogy or the designer clother analogy does not fit this model. Intel is mass market,
designer clothes are mass market. Maya will never ever reach this kind of market saturation
because it is simply not aimed at that kind of consumer.

It is aimed at professionals and specialists. Maya deserves to be the top modelling
package and is chasing Studio Max like mad. They are releasing a Mac version which
goes a long way in trying to woo the many, many creative people on that platform.

I am talking about Maya here and was responding to a ridiculous comment that it should
sell for $450 dollars.

Think of it as an investment in a product rather than a bargain basement hypermarket.

When I want a good meal I go to a decent restaurant, when I want a snack I go to Mc'Donalds.

I think Blender has the worst ever manual. PsP has a brilliant texture painting facility which can be scaled great for uv maps and a browser. The problem is adobe have there next 5 upgrades already packed and waiting to be shipped, Adobes motto.........Give the punters what they want in 3 years time and give them what they don''t want now.

The bottom two are correct as far as I know. Are you seeing two different types of decimal points or something (that''s a serious question, you make it sound like you see two different types of decimals; probably just me misunderstanding you though)?

Alright, I started this thread, and didn''t even think it would go over a single page. So allow me to END this thread before it goes any further. I hope after this final post, a moderator should close the thread.

Ancientcoder, you say you''re glad your company bought the program. Because it''s so powerful, you''ve never had to switch. So it kind of deserves the price. I agree. Could sell for less, but it''s not targetted at a wide variety of people.

N&V and Taphreek: how did you get started talking about math in foreign lands?

Kranonamo, if you have an illegal copy, you should delete it off your computer. In the end, this will benefit you. Trust me.

And as for the title my thread, Maya does very well beat Blender. BUT Blender is so powerful with such an unbeatable price (FREE!), that any normal guy like me who can''t afford Maya can''t help but like it.

Moderators, please close this thread.

I think it deserves to live. It is not a flame war yet, kill it or lock it when it bocomes one.

As for PSP Photoshop question the main reason for using photoshop is the very well done interface. Can be confusing in the beginning but when you get the hang of it its wonderful.
Also has a good feature set with useful tools and gadgets that I lack in PsP. PsP is cheaper though, I guess you get more for the money when buying PsP but if you want the best I recommend Photoshop. PsP doesn''t suck, its better for a thight budget but ask almost any professional and he''ll say photoshop.

I''d agree on the bottom two being the right ones in the comma/decimal discussion. I usually do this 15 000 = fifteen thousand and skip the decimal.
