And that is just fine by my books. You guys are the future and that is exactly what they should be doing because without you they do not have a product.

I have to count myself in the "oldies" group and I remember sitting outside a shop back in 1980 counting my pennies to see if I could afford that 8 bit computer with 1k of ram.

I could however have smashed the shop window and stolen it but then again I could have eased my conscience by proclaiming "it cost''s too much so I am going to steal it"

Actually, if you''re talking about PSP7 vs. PS6, Photoshop does have a number of features than PSP lacks. You don''t know how useful they are until you use them (the GIMP has most of them though ). I still use PSP for some things, since I still like it a lot, and it uses less RAM.

MK42, do you ever get confused with the decimal point in place of a comma thing?

i.e
15.000 kilometers
15.002 kilometers

The top one is 15 thousand, and the bottom is 15.002

Taphreek, a lot of Europe (and some other areas) uses decimal points instead of commas, and commas instead of decimal points. While the US (and some other areas) uses decimal points and commas in the places you''re used to them probably.

I understand supply & demand and all that, so I can see why all these products cost so much. Also, I've never been into pirated software, albeit a while back I found out about ROMs and emulators. I thought it was cool that I could play Zelda on my computer, but then I found out just how very illegal they are. I deleted every single file off of my computer.

Maybe I shouldn't be complaining, but let's be honest: people like to save money. I'm not going to spend thousands of dollars for something when its opponent sells for a few hundred. Yeah it's nice to have a lot of features for when you really do need them, but what the hey.

Another thing that bugs me is when companies make you pay them royalties for every time you use their product for a commercial project. If I'm a carpenter and I go buy a hammer, which is a tool just like any 3d modeller, should I have to pay the company who makes the hammer every time I use it to make a chair? No. I already bought the hammer once, I'm not going to buy it again and again.

Also, notice how all the best programs use the most memory, but their cheaper near-equivalents use much less? Kind of interesting.

Hey,

Well ya know I have never used Maya, and it sounds like and awesome program! If I had ~$15,000 to blow I would for sure get it. But for us poor ( or cheap either one you choose ) people Blender is awesome! I have been using Blender for about a month now and I love it. It''s great FOR MY NEEDS. If you think that what you want to do needs something high end like Maya, then I would suggest you go in that direction. Another thing is that you want to make sure that what you are purchasing (or downloading) is going to pay for itself. I mean, If you just make some games for fun and don''t plan to sell any of the games / programs you make then I don''t think you should Buy something so expensive, but then again, it''s your money. Well thats my 2 cents anyway. . .

oh and Photoshop is awesome. I have that and can''t leave it. however I am going to load PSP in a day or two (need it for web site).

Well I was just playing around with Blender and I now have full confidence in it. I have The Blender Book by Carsten Wartmann, and the CD has some really impressive animations.

It''s like this: you look at Blender still screenshots made only in minutes often by amateurs or fast-workers, and they don''t do it justice. You look at full animations, from amateurs and professionals, and they are incredible. You would never guess just how powerful this tool is until you actually use it.

I don''t go to college. I don''t make a lot of money. I''m sticking with Blender.
In response to ancientcoder:

Just because a product sells for lots of money doesn''t mean that it actually costs that much to produce the product and maintain profitability for a company. Look at Intel with the prices for it''s CPU''s. Even cutting their processor prices 50% isn''t going to make them bankrupt. Basically they charged that much because they thought they could get away with it.

Look at designer clothes. Do I really have to pay 50$ for a Kenneth Cole T-shirt? More often than not branding can substantially influence the pricing of a product. And when you get down to brass tacks, does it really cost 15,000$ to pay off all the software engineers that develop Maya and to maintain profitability? Maybe, just maybe if they did drop the price, it wouldn''t be such a niche market. If you can widen your demand base, then you can drop your prices.

So some of the points others have made on this board are valid. Sometimes you don''t always get what you pay for, and is the pricing on Maya high because it has a small user group, or does it have a small user group because the pricing is high?

The world has achieved brilliance without wisdom, power without conscience. Ours is a world of nuclear giants and ethical infants.
