Hi, I'm rigth now in the progress of obtaining a new computer. Which of the following configurations would you take? And why? - AMD Athlon64 X2 6000+ 2x3.0GHz 2x1024kB - Asus M2N32-SLI Del. (nForce 590 SLI) - 4096MB Corsair TWIN2X DHX DDR2-800 CL5 (2x 2048MB) - SLI-Bundle 2x NVidia GeForce 8800 GTX Extreme 768MB or - Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 - @2x3.33GHz 4096kB 1333FSB - Asus P5N32-E SLI (nForce 680i SLI) - 4096MB Corsair TWIN2X Dominator DDR2-1066 CL5 (4x 1024MB) - NVidia GeForce 8800 Ultra 768MB PCIe or - Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 - 2x2.67GHz 4096kB 1066FSB - Asus P5N32-E SLI - 2048MB Corsair TWIN2X Dominator DDR2-1066 CL5 (2x 1024MB) - SLI-Bundle 2x NVidia GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB PCIe I want to play games, program games and do simulations for university. Rigth now I would go with the second one. - Does an SLI System really make a big differens or is pure CPU Power more importent? - Can I run physics on one GPU and Graphics on the other? If this is not the right place to ask, please direct me to the place where it's more fitting to ask. Thank you for your time and replays.

Personally, I would go with the second option, but take a far cheaper graphics card for now, and upgrade it later.

Do you really need or want DX10 in the next 6 months? Never buy top of the line, you pay massive amounts of extra cash for a minor performance bonus over a short period.

I agree on going for the second. But as far as DX10 and 6 month...

Regardless, I also think that the graphics card you're going after is a little excessive in terms of price vs performance. Besides, come November, NVidia's next GPU will be out which supposidly is 3x faster than the current gen. I'd probably go for an 8800 GTS or 8600 right now and upgrade when the refresh comes around.
What monitor are you going to use with the system? If you are gaming at 2560x1600 you definitely need an 8800GTX, and if you play at 1920x1200 I would still recommend the GTX over the GTS. I see a lot of people saying that something is overkill or not worth it, but maybe they don't understand you need a lot of muscle to push modern high-end resolutions.
HI,

monitor is running at 1600x1200. Thank you all for your replies. I'm going to look at cheaper GPUs and see how well they work out.

I think the best bang for the buck right now is the 8800 GTS, which has 96 shading units (as opposed to the ultra/GTX 128) for 1/2 to 1/3 the cost.
