Can anybody suggest a good free 3d modeller that will save bitmap snapshots (something that could be used to make sprites)?

You may want to try pov-ray, it's a free 3d package that lets you create 3d objects using a C-like syntax.. there are a lot of modellers that work with pov-ray although not all are free.. Just type pov-ray homepage in your favorite search engine..
