Hello. I have been thinking of making a custom operating system that loads off of a floppy at boot up. I am thinking of making this in either ASM or C++. Either one is fine, heck, QBasic is ok too I suppose Ok, I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or info on this. Seeing as it doesn''t seem well documented on the net. I would really appreciate if someone could give me any web site links, files, info, etc. on how to do this. I want to put all the things that are needed on a floppy that i can run at start up and switch to that instead of Windows for whatever I need it to do. Then if I take it out go back to Windows. It would be really small and simple, and most likely like DOS, if that. So any info, I''d really appreciate. Also, does anyone know where I can get free copies of the DOS OS, legal, and free, if that is possible. All the run-times and things I would need to make a DOS boot-up disk. Thanks a lot for any help! I am not worthy of a sig!

There are a bunch of free operating systems that comes with source to be found at this site. Most of them are Unix clones, but I suppose Unix is a good place to start (lots of programs come with source... ).

have you already heard of reactOS? www.reactos.com, they want to create a winnt clone, and have done quite a good job so far, you might be interested helping them of.

I wrote a boot sector kernel loading prog in asm a while back. I''ll e-mail it 2 you if you want.

This is a good site for os development info.
