Hello, I was wondering if there were any preferred tools or techniques for creating characters that ya see in the old school rpg's on super nintendo and playstation? I'm not an artist so just checking if anyone knows of some tool or something that has been created to aid in making such characters. Im talking about the cartoony graphics from games like.
I'm not a professional on the subject but I would recommend using inkscape or illustrator since it will give you the ability to edit the sprites using vectors.

Is there anything that would make it really easy to make the sprites? For example something that comes with premade legs and bodies and such where ya can just put in the movements, colors etc?
Not sure if too many programs come with premade limbs.
Another method is to take snapshots of 3D models and make sprites from those.

For you my friend: Charas Maker
Pixel Artist - 24x32, 35x50, and isometric styles. Check my online portfolio.
That is exactly what I was talking about Omegavolt. Thank you.

Now how about maps? Anything for making it easy to draw old-school cartoony isometric houses and such? I found a program called Tile Edit in the sticky 2D software thread that seems nice and it is a basic pixel editor. Would that be my best bet for making maps?

I'm also not a pro, but maybe this tool is intresting for you: GraphicsGale.
You can download a free version of it, or buy the shareware version.

Or you can also just use the GIMP [smile]

oh sweet lord no, old school rpg sprites are drawn pixel by pixel in the raster program of your choosing, vectors would be the worst way to go about it.
Anyone know of a good program that helps in organizing the sprites and the animations into a bitmap? And maybe something that helps with getting the texels right or something.
