Hey, GDNet musicians. I've been working on something new lately. http://antisheep.gnuk.net/songs/Orchestra1.mp3 I hadn't really gotten much into orchestration until I made a medley of Zelda songs near the end of last year. In a spurt of creativity, I started on this a couple days ago, and I thought I owed it to you guys to let y'all hear. You can give criticism if you like, or just praise, or whatever. Or just don't post at all. =) Thanks for hearing me out though. This is about 8 hours worth of work, done completely with royalty-free samples and soundfonts.

I think this is a great piece of work, and the time spent on it definitely shows. I could easily see this in a top-notch game. It could fit in well with many genres, but fantasy comes to mind rather quickly. There is even a hint of Mid-Eastern vibe in there, too.

Though it isn't suitable for looping at this stage (because of the introductory noises), that isn't necessarily a bad thing and could be easily changed to allow looping if so desired.

Great job!
when you do something right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all.

Nice job on this one. Let the creativity flow out of you; I can tell you have it. Orchestrations are great opportunities to think of ideas.

I'm curious to know where you got some of these soundfonts though?

To answer Dr Mean, Squidfont Orchestral and Sinfonia Orchestra are two main soundfonts I that used. I also used Florestan Woodwinds. While I'm on the subject, Splendid Grand is a top-notch free piano soundfont as well.

Google 'em. =)

Oh, and oscinis: I'm not done yet. It's a work in progress; I haven't ventured very far into the piece quite yet. So yeah, I wasn't planning on looping it or anything. =)

Nice textures...though that first chime gliss seeemed a little out of place so early. Great finds on those soundfonts, I'll be sure to download them.

Only critique I have so far is try playing with a little tempo changes. I know there's a percussive beat, but it might be worth it to cut the beat once in a while and let a note or two hang before moving forward. Since it's such a small snippet that comment may not be too valid as such a variation needn't occur so soon within the piece.

Post more when you get more done!

Don't mean to bump my own topic, but I just refreshed the page after working a bit more on it. Same link ( here )...

And I also wanted to say thanks for the idea, anthemaudio. I'm sure I'll use it.
