While all these suggestions on how to flesh out the possession based gameplay are really intriguing, and would make the basis of a good game in their own right, I'm a bit wary about going over the top with the details on this unless this is the core gameplay mechanic of the game. I think posessing a person and driving the around like a starship would be cool as a complete game. However if that said person was also driving around a real starship and running a galactic empire then I'm fairly sure I'd get swamped by all the micromanagement that I would have to be doing.

I agree with Trapper Zoid, the result of this discussion should be only a simple set of rules...even if they're complicated in the middle of the process.
I like the Chi thing! You could even use this name in the game, people associate it with all sorts of mystical things and will then try to find a spiritual meaning for everything else you have in your game :P And using the Chakra points as part of the interface is cool too. I just can't think of anything too detailed right now.
I just don't agree with resting while your host moves around. It seems a bit silly, even if you accelerate time in the meanwhile, all you can do is watch in horror as your host does the most idiotic and unlikely string of actions, that results in the collapse of your empire... with a huge bang :)
What about if ultimate control was up to you, but you knew all the time what your host would rather do? Listen to him -> a happy host! It would be awsome if this involved some good dialogue, and the AI understood when you said "I told you so!". Are you goint to make this a bit like training a pet? Or simply a set of percentage bars that you must manage?
