Slow DNS

For some reason my Debian box has DNS issues. It seems like every so often the DNS server I'm using will just stop responding for several seconds, then magically start working again. No other computers on my LAN which are using the same DNS servers have this issue. Just a few minutes ago during one of the DNS freezes, I ran this command:
time dig @blah www.google.com
(blah is actually the IP of my DNS server) and it timed out. But then I tried this:
time dig @4.2.2.2 www.google.com
which is a totally different DNS server and it ALSO timed out!! Normally both these servers work fine. What's going on?
I like the DARK layout!
