How do you spice up MMORPG's now, if you have basic gameplay elements to things like World of Warcraft, FF XI, Runescape,e.t.c The MMORPG games arn't alll to different from each other, most beat other in just size. Also is it possible to make a real time MMORPG, but make it fun? Afterall you could train to lv 60 yet a lv 1 could beat you just by his her skill. BTW, that a real time with fantasy type weapons.
To reply to the first point; from reading and general observations it seems as if the large, online gaming worlds are coming up a bit dry. Its try graphics get better, stuff gets better, worlds get bigger and names get longer, but what's actually changing? Its quite rare (not impossible) to find a game with totally new or unique ideas within it. There all based around similar constructs, explore, fight, hoard, learn. All of these things are on a learning curve and all a re from primordial times.
Its getting harder and harder to create a "new" and thus exciting idea within a game and besides, people don’t like change. These things together make making a game more exhilarating or evolving extremely hard. Which is why I am trying to explore into the community side, if you can make people feel not for characters within a game, but for actual people within the game then you begin to reach a new level or emotion, you don’t feel for your character, you feel for yourself. I'm hoping that adding more methods of communication between users, so they really do feel as the player will help the become more immersed within the game.
I thing that to make an MMORPG more interesting, or spice it up cant be don’t by simply adding more of the same, users need to get a whole new experience, like going form Commander Keen to Doom. Giving the user the same experience but with more emotional attachment should spice things up, make people more passionate.

Subtract one or both of the M's.

The world is boring and dry because it caters to 10,000 heroes. To be unique in such a game, you would have to drop hero status and just live a normal life [wink]

I honestly don't believe they can be improved. The MMO conflicts with the RPG.

Ok I got an idea. Why not instead of heroes, all players would be normal people, I mean kinda like
soldiers. Fighting for some cause. For example we have 2 empires(clans, whatever) with a history of wanting to crush each other and control
the world or galaxy.. (for a good reason). The player have to choose between supporting any empire. When you start the game you can do a tutorial or go to the game world. You can buy weapons, armor. You can have houses, buy vehicles. Of course, there would be no xp points, no skills. There are no quests in this game. The 2 empires fight for pieces of land (zones, space, worlds). You have to defend your empire's lands (build houses, vehicles, turrets). +- kinda like battlefield, where you need to secure waypoints and such (but on a HUGE. scale).Of course, forget about having to wait 10 secs to secure a zone, it would be more like killing/destroying all enemy's buildings and people around, and having to build your own buildings/factories to secure the zone/land/space/world.

Popularity or uniqueness would be dictated, not by xp or skills, but by how many people you killed weekly/montly, how many mates you helped (i.e you see one of your mates wounded lying on the floor, you could carry him to a hospital or something like that(risking your life, or something valuable to the player like money or goods; every time you die you loose 10/15/20 percent of your money, goods or lands you secured) or leave him lying in the floor because you are afraid of getting killed) or how many zones you've secured.

Of course for some reason there would be random periods of time where players can go and take lands/zones/planets. I mean, that way there would be times of peace, where players could rebuild their buildings and gather resources, etc. And war times (announced previously) where players can go and try to take new lands/zones/planets.

Why doesn't anyone make a small scale online RPG where you could get 3-6 people and play a game together. I think it would be fun.

Tales of Symphonia: your friends can pick up the control and help you out during combat

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Square-Enix and Nintendo's conspiracy to force people to buy more gameboys just so that people can play together

Zelda and the Four Swords or whatever its called: another scam to get people to buy more gameboys

So, have many people heard of Universal Century Online? Its a MMORPG based on the gundam universe. Its suppose to hit the states next year according to bandai. One of the original ideas in the game was that you don't have to choose to be a hero, and everyone starts out as a common person. Not sure if the implementation went through, but originally, you could choose to just be an ordinary farmer or a plain civilian, who possibly gets stepped on by a mobile suit in combat.

And even if you join the militay, mobile suits in the gundam universe are limited, so only a few will actually get them, if any. So, most people may end up being foot soldiers or piloting tanks.

(Of course, I've never played the actual game, just read some of the descriptions, but it seems in line with the curent thread)

I might be totally wrong, but isn't Guild Wars like this?

Wasn't Guild Wars some sort of MMO? If it isn't, I'll surely take a look at it.

I was however thinking more of somethig like classic RPGs, that are ment to be played by small parties of people. You could do this with Baldurs Gate for example, but IMHO it wasn't very well done.

edit: sorry for thread take over... I'm offtopic here.
