It is foolish for a wise man to be silent, but wise for a fool.

The truly wise man knows that he is also a fool. Should he open his mouth?

but seriously - another vote for Ubuntu as a first distro to try

as for linux me and my friends are of the opinion that its code is a collection of 20- 30 year old rubbish

Awesome statement, considering the fact that Linux is about 14 years old. :)

Cheers,

Let's also remember that code which lasts a long time is almost always code which was written well in the first place.

Or code that was terribly written but too entrenched to be easily removed. C'mon, how many poorly-written, 15-year old COBOL programs are still running because the companies don't want to spend the money to update them?

on the other hand when you see how security aspects have been implemented on linux in comparsion to its counterpart windows

And how do you see that, considering you don't have access to the Windows code?

Well, considering large parts of it leaked a while ago, he might just have access to it.. .. :p

.. Unless you run Mandriva or RedHat.. :p J/K, but they are kinda trying to be as much windows-ish as possible..

Another dist that I kinda like is Slackware.. It's not really hard, if you know that it ain't windows, and it's pretty powerful.. Nowdays it comes with a nice installer as well.. I only tried it on VMWare though.. :p

i should say BSD for all those freaks.
LinuxISO.org
LinuxCD.org

good luck - if you become fully proficient, it becomes a much more efficient environment than windows, regardless of what many here will argue.
