How much does a fully registered version of Maya run?.. just in case I get hooked in by their freebies.

If you mean fully registered as in paid £1500 for it then it is fully functional forever. The PLE is fully functional except for rendering because it sticks the Maya PLE logo all over the rendered image.

I'm using TS6.6, but it seems kinda klunky, but I can't really say that Max or Maya would be any better, because I've never used them. I would kinda like to know what I'm missing.

You might want to look into Softimage XSI. It competes with Max and Maya, and its been gaining ground in game development, having been used for Half-Life 2. The "Foundation" version costs only $500. A free "Mod Tool" version is also available for making HL2 and Unreal Tournament mods. It includes the "Mental Ray" renderer, which is very nice. A 30 day trial is available for download.
Use your brain or lose your mind.

Softimage also offers a PLE-equivalent, EXP. Bear in mind that you won't be able to get any files out of PLE or EXP, if you do decide to upgrade.

I assume they probably have some term that prevents you from taking a 2D image processor and editing out the logo. What do they do for saving off .x files?

If I remember correctly, you can't just edit out the logo. It literally sits on top of your image, covering almost the whole thing.

And as to your last question...no idea, sorry.

Probably re-texture it all with the Maya PLE logo and put 3d logos everywhere and do a meshweld on it so it is totally screwed.

Haha... they're quite tricky aren't they.
You can't export to .x because you can't export. The only file type supported is .mp (the Maya Personal Learning Edition format).

And you can't legally purchase a 3dsMax version that's older than the current version. (7 is the current version)

The difference between 6 and 7 was mostly in the animation. Not major, just trivial changes. A couple of features were improved, but until version 7.5 was released (about a month ago), there wasn't a major reason to upgrade. Now there is.

You can buy a old version of 3dsmax, of course there are not retailers that sold a old version but you can buy a used version of 3dsmax.

As far as I'm aware, the liscences are non-transferable.

Although I'm not so sure about that... *has to read through the liscence agreement*
