Here you go this weblink advertises 3d studio max 6 with character studio for $129. I've been looking at it for a while. Not sure if thats a real price or some how a scam. I think its for a used version or something. Check it out.

That -has- to be either a scam or its for the educational version of the software only. The educational versions generally have fairly hefty license requirements as to what you can do with them (ie not allowed to use for commercial purposes) and are only sold through universities/schools or to students in accredited unis or schools. I can't imagine discreet would sell their software through resellers for 4000 dollars or thereabouts, but allow these guys to sell unrestricted copies for 129.95 !!

also check out the terms and conditions:
"2.3. You cannot register the software with the manufacturer and updates are available not for all the products;"

v. suspicious !!

lol. Did a whois lookup on the domain,
Neo net ltd
John Hopking (soft@lastsoft.biz)
PO box 675 , denver .co

US
Tel. +1.2372732

PO box only for a start. So did a whois lookup on the lastsoft.biz,

Registrant Name: Joshua Kepko
Registrant Organization: Kepko & vason co
Registrant Address1: pervo str 17-2
Registrant City: Sofia
Registrant Postal Code: 77188

Registrant Country Code: BG

sooo, bulgaria eh ??
Do a google on Joshua Kepko and John Hopking and you'll get a couple of
results, including one guy who actually bought one of the products and
got a warezed version with a crack. So I wouldn't be tempted to give them my
CC details anytime soon :)

You save: $3870.00

Either illegal or run by a nice multi-billionaire who can afford to give $3870 discounts on stuff.

so where can u get maya from? whats the cheapest price?
That depends. Illegally will cost you jail-time and around $500,000 ^^ (Sweet deal, ne? >_>). Legally, you can get the learning edition of Maya for FREE, but the other two versions (complete and unlimited) will cost you $2,199 and $6,999 respectively.

Which IS afterall what he was asking for, wasn't it?

He asked for a cheap, educational version; not something commercial.

They sell the educational -> commercial upgrades, too. After all that is said and done, you've spent the same amount of money as the commercial version, however. If you don't know Max already, go with Maya. Max will spoil you (^^), and it's more expensive.

I forgot about this thread, sorry for my absense. No I'm not looking for an academic version. Although I want to learn 3DS Max, I'm not is school, which I believe you need to be to get the academic version. I'm using TS6.6, but it seems kinda klunky, but I can't really say that Max or Maya would be any better, because I've never used them. I would kinda like to know what I'm missing.
3dsMax comes with a free 30-day trial you could use, and the personal learning edition of Maya can be used by anyone, for free, forever.

There's also I fact, with most of the programs, I believe, that licenses can't be resold.

ok, so lets say someone want to create a portfolio/showrell for them selves and all they cant afford full versons of Maya or 3DS, so they are learning using the free version of maya and Gmax.

will they be able to use whatever they have created in their folios or is it breaking some law?

as far as i know, then cant use what they have made for commercial uses, does this cover folios and such too?

oh and, the latest version of 3DS is 7 right?

so is 6 cheaper and cant someone buy that rather than 7? or is the difference between the two major?

Except for rendering - it sticks the Maya PLE logo all over it.

How much does a fully registered version of Maya run?.. just in case I get hooked in by their freebies.
