Keep conjuring the undead, my friends...
hard question!

I can''t give one single answer.

Lemmings had a really catchy collection of music. I realize that the music was all based on existing pieces (so maybe it only gets half credit), but the arrangements were very upbeat and catchy. I havent played the game in years but I still find myself whistling the songs from time to time.

The main theme from Samba De Amigo (Samba De Jeniero) is so amazingly catchy that it gets mentioned even though its only a single song (the rest of the songs are ok, but not nearly as good..and like lemmings..mostly remixed versions of existing songs).

Strider (the original arcade game and conversions for Genesis etc). Amazing music for that era. Still pops into my head unexpectedly.

Honorable mention to both Super Mario Brothers and Sonic the Hedgehog -- while both scores (from the original games in the series) are fairly corny, they are pretty unforgetable...

Not exactly the best, but great nonetheless for all Star Wars fans. The music of the semi-new game Force Commander. It''s the original Star Wars themes, but with electric guitar, it sounds tight. They have the mp3s at lucasarts.com, they''re pretty cool.

I have to agree the FF7s music was pretty darn good. It really set the mood for the game well.

Thanks for all the responses!

I forgot to mention the old NES game KLAX. That music just kicked butt.

I think I''d have to say the 7th Guest was the best soundtrack. That was one of the first CD-ROM''s out there, and it was awesome. (I wonder what ever happened to the Fat Man, anyway). "Them bones, them bones, them, dryyyyyy bones"...heh.

The 11th Hour was good music-wise, too.

I also like the music in the original command and conquer...

And how about Gabriel Knight III (or maybe it was II)...the one with the full Oprah. (I work with a guy that used to work at Sierra--apparantly because of the Oprah, the game was 16 CD''s long...so they had to cut a bunch of it out).

Shadows of Darkness (One of the Quest for Glory) series was good, as well...they did use a full orchestra, so it should have been awesome.

Most Lucas Arts games have great sound, too...Anyone remember Loom?
Amen, Necromancer! If you haven''t already, get the FF7 Reunion soundtrack, it has three of the game''s themes done with full orchestra, one of which is One Winged Angel. Wanger would be envious.
As for other games, pretty much anything else Squaresoft is good. Secret of Mana''s opening theme is beautiful. The Monkey Island series is definitely a blast to listen to. The original Metal Gear had some pretty innovative tunes. Something odd, everytime I listen to Rush''s "Red Sector A", it reminds me of Contra.
Something I feel is lacking from some current games is a lack of definite theme. Half-life seems totally devoid of one. Resident Evil doesn''t have a single recurring theme, even. I hope MGS keeps some semblance of the original music. I trust it will.

I haven''t heard all that much, but the music I tend to keep drifting back to is Breath of Fire (the original, BOF2 just sucked ), which (and this will hurt... me... most likely) is IMO the best RPG ever... at least that I''ve played...

My favorite sound track would have to be Parasite Eve''s. It was creepy..... yet dramatic.

Whover mentioned Chrono Trigger''s sound track. I''d have to agree it was pretty good. Ecspecially frog''s theme. Frog was such a bad ass.

Speaking of TA having an orchestra sound track, so did Dark Reign. And that game came out about the same time as TA. Activision and Cave Dog must''ve been doing some spying.

it has to be the manic minor music awesome I am using it in my current game. The manic minor tune was the Hall of the mountain king if anyone is interested

- Command & Conquer, the original had some good tunes
- Doom, Doom 2, though most (or maybe all) of the music was not original. Ripped from Metallica, Pantera, Slayer etc. etc. etc.
- Final Fantasy 6 & 7, especially the music at 6''s world map and 7''s Sephiroth theme
- Homeworld, though you got bored of them quite quickly
- Total Annihilation, same as above

Can''t remember any more now.
