Not to be a nag or anything, but ripping/editing pixel art from other sources is just not cool (and isn't the best thing to keep in a portfolio either) - especially (as there is at least some evidence of in the thread) if you do not come clear about it. Inspired, okay. Pixel-to-pixel correspondance, bad.

But I don't want to derail. Pixel art!

Damn, the boards colors are less than suitable for pixel art.

I agree that stealing another persons works and blatantly passing them off as your own is rather low, but to insinuate such is an insult to the integrity of honest artists (such as myself). For the purposes of this thread i think such allegations should be better left out, as they tread a very fine line. Some peoples styles run very close to others, and other people like to create fanworks of some commonly known games/styles/characters which could falsely appear like direct ripping or alteration. I'm not here to lay judgement on the validity of other people, i trust that the people who post here are honest about their accomplishments, no matter how large or small they are, and will assume so when assessing their work.

That said, i think your isometric PC desk is pretty cool, is that a Gateway computer? rofl. It has alot of nice details to it, maybe you should blow it up abit to see some of the finer details more. ;D

I just finished my little Flash essay-game called Chicken Assault if anyone wants to try it out. I've tested on two computers so far: a Mac, which was used to make the game, and a PC with an older version of Flash, which didn't work (edit: its working now - weird). Its all my own pixel art except some small, easily recognizable images from old games used as reference material during the essay portion.

There may be a bug with the preloader: its supposed to show you a menu once the whole thing is downloaded. Sometimes it doesn't in which case you can just reload the page and it should work. I'm certain there are more bugs - if you find any or have troubles running the swf, let me know. I probably won't be able to do anything about it since it already works on the machines I need it to, but it'd be good to know anyway.
Hey dcosborn. The game turned out pretty nice. I love the graphics, they do remind my of the old mario games. Great job. Get a good grade? Hope so.

Have to agree with Gyrthok on the "ripping" subject. The 16*16 sprite I did on the previous page is similar to the sprites on a tutorial I was using to learn pixel art (if you are really into pixel art you've probably seen it before). The thing is, the reason it looks like that is because I was learning(like I said in in the original post) from the tutorial, not trying to steal his work. I actually did that one from memory because I was trying to remember what the sizes of everything were supposed to be. I did the shading and everything myself (didn't even use true blacks on it, as I don't generally like using it) and since just about all 16*16 sprites have those dimensions (i.e. The old Final Fantasies) they will surely look similar. The only thing that can really make them look different is the hair and clothing, and I did use the same hair (i think, not sure if its exact) because at the time (beginner) I couldn't make anything different look right and I remembered how to did the hair from the tutorials. The sprite is definitely not in my portfolio as it was one of the very first I did. The only reason I posted it was because I don't really have anything else (except my airship) and I wanted the thread to stay active. Don't really consider that stolen, more like a version of I guess, as I did it completely from memory not even looking at the original for reference and I used different techniques for it's creating (I think that sprites look better without a solid black boarder). Oh well, not even sure if you were referring to me, but if you were I hope this explains it better.

I dunno yet, I'm handing it in on Tuesday. I'm quite pleased with it even though its just Flash 'cause its my first finished game in like 7 years. [lol] Once you get into the academic languages like C++ you really lose track of time.
The graphics and terrain are good, the gameplays fun too. I like how the turtles fly up with wings when they die. :D

Your control scheme is a little unusual though. Its challenging to keep yourself up, which is good. But your instructions are a little brief, i was abit confused when i pressed up and didn't keep going up, instead crashing into the ground (repeatedly). ;D

Yeah the controls are hard to master, but I think the consept is very cool. I'm sure you will get a great grade no worries there. Addictive to play too.

I especially like the megaman style gif you got there ArchangelMorph, how long did it take you to animate that?

The animated one?
Well not too long, maybe an hr or two? but I cheated a little by drawing out the changes in each body part through the animation and then just laying then out together onto each frame of the anim rather than re-drawing each frame individually.. Some of the frames had to be completely editted tho like the one with the muzzle-flash.. The whole thing from concept to creation took about a 6 hrs I think..

Thanx for the compliments but megaman wasn't really the style I was going for.. more of a rayman-type theme? (although I can see the similarities to the megaman animation style.. maybe its to do with the way its animated..?)

Ann I love ur sprites btw.. They are really good although I think they could benefit from using some brighter colours and decreasing the saturation just slightly.. (although it depends on what the graphics for the rest of the game are like so its really just a style choice..)

Excellent work tho!
Maybe I came off a little too rash - I am not saying that anyone has "borrowed" from anyone for a fact. It was more of a gut feeling that something I can prove.

jake2431: I remember now - it is from "So You Want to be a Pixel Artist?", right? Great guide for aspiring artists, it is.

Thats right. I was going to put a link on the thread for it yesterday, but his site said that it had exceeded its bandwidth so I didn't. It is a great tutorial, I have actually linked it on another thread recently. Didn't think you were to harsh, I just wanted to explain myself because I didn't want people to think I was trying to take credit for someone elses work. I agree that thats wrong.
