Halo-fan-game Idea
I have been playing around with a game idea in my head. So much, in fact, that I recruited about 3 people to help me with it. The idea for the actual gameplay is still being finalized but OK. NOTE: this game will most likly not be sold. It will be a sort of free online game... unless bungie will give us permission. The game will be a kind fan version of Halo. You will be able to choose any kind of character: Flood, Grunts, brutes, Jackals, Elites, Marines, Spartans, etc. It will be in third or first person. The game will be RPG style, where you can make your way up in the world of halo. The game will follow a unique story-line than spreads across the 3 books of Halo. I have already written about 50 pages of cinematics, level ideas, weapons, vehicles, etc. It might also feature a miniature multiplayer component that will allow for small games hosted on a custom server my team will set up. I am still brainstorming with my team on the other ideas.. but we have prety much most of the models and a test level ready. Any comments? Or suggestions on what we should add or change?
Umm.. okay.
Do you and your friends have any experience at making games?

Well, Chet's dad works on programs (not games) and he's giving him lessons. And Eric is going to a video game development camp over the summer where he will learn TONS of code... Joe has extensive experience in 3d modeling (he's not doing coding). And I have some experience in coding, but I'm mostly doing design and coordination (figuring out the physics, fine-tuning the code).
And we're getting more people and we have most of the models and resources (compilers, etc) prepared so we have a good footing.

show the community what you already got and then they might be of help. like show them the models, levels, already done code etc.
Cheers

Well all the best on it. Go @ it full force. It's important for you to believe & really put effort into it - that's how you learn. Results rarely come first time but that isn't important. What is is that you focus fully on the project(s) & are willing to put in whatever effort is required. Continue with this (even after fails) & you will eventually succeed. Most of all: Have fun ;]

thanks! But the thing is, we are just getting started. I need to get some textures together and most importantly NONE OF THE MODELS HAVE SKELETONS (the animation rigs)
So anyway, I also just got Dev C++ compiler and am trying to familiar with the headers, syntax, and GUI. But the tutorials for it are writted using C... not C++. I need to figure out how to actually be able to use the files I have. I'm also trying out this game engine I found to see if its any good (all my models are in .obj format). The game engine is Irrlicht and it claims to support .obj files, but I have no idea how to implement them into the program. So any help you guys could give me on that would be appreciated.
Oh yeah, and I would like you guy's opinion on something. You played the game Halo right? And you've seen those demo clips when it was planned for the Mac (in 3rd person) right?
Well, which should be better and easier to do for my team, 3rd person, or 1st person? (not vehicles, they will be 3rd).

I watched Halo's development for years, and was devastated when it went to FPS format. Try to keep it third-person if you can.
In the context of an RPG, I'd like to see a less direct combat system than an FPS might have. Take a look at games like Freedom Fighters and Psi-Ops to get ideas for third-person shooter control schemes. I think that a robust auto-aim system, linked to the character's stats and skills, would be the best blend of twitch and dice to make it fun without removing the RPG feel.
One of Halo's many strengths was the connection I had with the Marine support. Humans and Covenant both used squad-based tactics and organization. I would like very much to see a sort of party system that allowed you to recapture that experience. Small fire teams are a great dynamic, and could be used well in a Halo RPG. Look at the Ogre Battle games for some neat factors to consider when grouping units.
You sound like you have the drive and the manpower to get something out of this endeavor. Don't let the GD.net cynics get you down. Good luck, and keep us posted on your progress!

Thanks for the support, I got much less praise at other sites...
Anyway, I'm open to any ideas and help. This game cant be sold, since its based of a microsoft game (and my taking on microsoft is like a pistol versus meteor).
So If wanna help and have some great insight and experience in some areas, please PM me or post here. Or if you have ideas and/or resources we could use please tell me.

Just one thing on Dev-C++. You don't have to look for tutorials specificly written for it. Any C++ tutorial should be able to be used and/or translated from another IDE without much effort. Also look take a look at the sites that GameDev.net hosts, like NeHe which might prove to be specially useful.
normally threads like this are considered flaimbait, and i'm not surprised that you ran into flames, but you and your team are actually trying instead of saying stuff like "im makin a mmorgp thats gonna be betterer than everquest and world of warcraft and all that jazz. can i have some free codez and models and programs to make it? (that was a real thread in some other forum)" sounds pretty cool too, and im a sucker for halo, so sure i'll help. just try to practice your skills along the way so that if your project dosen't get finished, you still gain something from it and can work on something else based on what you learned.
"(and my taking on microsoft is like a pistol versus meteor)."
i just like how that sounds :) (and i have a picture in my head of it too).
