Statistics of computer game genres

Im trying to find statistics of how many players each major computer genre has (FPS, RTS, strategy, RPG etc) worldwide but seemingly to no avail. Has anyone seen anything of the sort or have any tips of where to look? All help is greatly appreciated.
NPD Techworld has POS data available so you can examine the sales pattern of games by their various attributes, including genre. This is a $$$ service, though.

To get the specifics on this, you need to get an industry overview from a firm like Gartner that does overviews for industry investors. I have one of these and it gives a detailed breakdown. Unfortunately mine is 4 years old, and the document cost about 900 bucks :( Sometimes people release them online. In know that a year ago or two 3D Realms released one for free. You might want to track it down.
