I would have gone with "JORGE," like Jorge Posada. Plus, it actually makes for a better acronym: Java Online Real-time Gaming Engine. But that's neither here nor there.

Hey man, I got that first!
Now I will have to sue you [evil]

JOGRE uses the GPL and OPEN uses the LGPL (GNU Lesser Public Licence) so they will never become commercial products in the sense of being closed source.
Falsch.

The licensor can release future versions under alternative licenses. If version x.y of product Z is GPL, versions x.(y+1) and greater can be offered under any other license the licensor desires. It has happened before that a project was migrated from GPL to, say, BSD or MIT.

FYI.

Have any of you guys/gals had a chance to look at the web site (http://jogre.sourceforge.net)? What do you think of the concept of JOGRE? Is programming games in Java a risky option? Will many people want to join this project?
It certainly looks like a useful and well-designed thing. Multiplayer (web)games are hot and Java is a good vehicle for that. So I guess there might be some interest in it.
