That's intersting, I found RF2 to be slander on the Red Faction name. First off, they raped GeoMod, its only a distant echo of what it used to be. You'd think that it might of been improved for a newer game; guess not. And as far as the MP, its a step above the frist RF, and thats still fairly low on the stairs. What your asking for in it, Volition probably never even considered, for competitive reasons. It could have been great, but the FPS market just doesn't have room for great like that. Too many other games are hogging the buyers.
And btw, its Triplex, haha. I just don't want to be known as XXX, like the terrible movie. Pronounced Try-Plex.
Giving enemies 1 hit kill weapons
You can always give the weapon incredibly large spread/inacruacy too. That way, even if they aim directly at you, only 1/5 or so of the bullets will hit.
The rail gun was probably the worst designed weapon to ever appear in a first person shooter. After seeing the "you have died" screen dozens of times I lost respect for the game and started "gaming the system" to cheat using the game's own rules.
I survived the tram ride by saving and restoring a split second before an enemy train came near. I used the game's pathfinding deficiencies to line up multiple enemies so I could powermax on railgun ammo (bad immersion there: "Hey, joe just got sniped through the wall... I guess I'll just stand around looking at his corpse!" :>). I used knowledge of the AI's triggers (throw a grenade triggers AI to come out and shoot) to trick it into kill sacks. And when I realized that it was simply teleporting enemies behind me, I restored, backed up and waited for them to be right in the line of fire (the canyon crawl especially). When I played through a second time I have to admit that I was so out of character that instead of grabbing the doctor's suit and stealthing my way through I killed every single soul in the medical complex because they were just bots to me by then.
I had fun doing it from a programmer's point of view, but it definitely raped all immersion I might have had. This is especially true because I know the AI always has my X,Y,Z coordinates, and so I'm not really fighting against the corporation, I'm fighting against bots with no real tactical skill.

Exactly, Wavinator.
Everything past the whole tram area was beaten by cheating the AI and killing them in some out-of-character matter. I didn't go as far as to kill everyone in the medical complex, but I know what you mean. Who'd of thought one weapon could DESTROY the whole game's experience.

All that's needed, IMHO, is to require the gun to charge up. While its charging it makes a notable noise, which gives a cautious player just enough time to dodge.
It seemed pretty obvious, but since nobody mentioned it...

See, the rail-gun could flash a warning message across the screen telling you it was in the next room, and you still couldn't "dodge" it. I see why you think its an obvious suggestion, but the rail-gun is too magical for that kind of logic.

How about having an adapting AI that only makes battles as hard as this particular gamer can take? "Hard but doable" is at very different levels with different people.

That's been tried quite a few times but died out once people realized the flaw. The flaw is that I could play crappily through the entire game on purpose and then fly through the difficult sections near the end becuase it was so easy. It also removes any difficulty from the user and make the game un-fun.
