New Attacking Style

Hey I'm thinking of implementing this in my game. I haven't seen it been done before. Basically this is what happens: Normally when an emeny attacks you he will first have to get in your range. Then once in your range he will hit/shoot etc. I'm thinking of this. If you start running away, the enemiy will follow, as usual. But if he can run faster than you, he will shoot when he's in range whilst running at the same time. Of course not all enemies will be able to run faster than you. This will increase the difficulty a bit because if a speedy archer runs after you, you will either have to hide behind a tree or attck him. What do you guys think, will it work?

I like the variation, but how you use it will depend on the type of game and situation. I think often we're faster than the enemy because there are ALWAYS more of them than there are of us. Running away is a chance to regroup, rethink and restore. Take that away and it takes some of the strategy out of the game.

You may want to have some reason why the enemy shouldn't be doing this all the time, whether that's fatigue or lack of accuracy. Otherwise it's the only strategy that makes sense.

(btw, some enemies in Morrowind were very challenging because not only would they run away from you they'd keep attacking as they backpedaled. While this could get annoying, it just made me plan more careful and execute many more backstabs and ambushes)

I won't really have to make it as complex as that with fatigue and such. If your're a thin, fit female warrior, you will probably be able to out run a goblin.

The only problem will be if you run into a group of say 5 archers that can run faster than you, then you're pretty much screwed.

But then I could add items like traps and smoke bomb type things, so they can't see you, and then you can escape.

This would be fine for an enemy if it makes sense for him to do so. A horse archer for example, will be able to run rings around whilst shooting you repeatedly.

On the other hand, a foot archer would have no chance. Can you imagine someone running, loading and pulling a 100lb+ bow, watching where he's going and aiming at a moving target? He's not going to be able to hit a barn door at 10 paces. He's more likely to fall over and end up releasing the arrow into his foot.

Other weapons might work better. Javelins could be thrown on the run - in fact, doing so might potentially increase the range and damage of the weapon - although the act of releasing it would slow the thrower down. A crossbow or primitive firearm could also work, but they're likely to be one-shot deals. You might be able to reload a light crossbow on the run though.

Higher tech stuff you can probably get away with it more, but even so, moving and shooting at the same time is likely to slow you down and reduce your accuracy.
