Possible to create a 3d model from a 2d sprite?
Hello. I searched the forums for a while and didn't find anything that helped so I wanted to pose this question: Does anyone have any ideas or resources to help faciliate creation of a low poly 3d model from a 2d sprite image. For example, an isometric chair sprite that could be converted to a simple 3d form. High poly counts not needed or desired. I have heard and read about people writing their own utilities to do similar but haven't been able to find anything solid to work with. Really not looking for reasons why I should not want to or need to do this. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
Yes but you would need views for a froont side(and if detailed enough top bottom right and back)

Theres a tutorial at
http://www.psionic.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/tutorials/lowpoly/tmgun.html
in which a 3d model is created from a 2d image. Basically it's limited to images where the depth is fairly obvious, but it lets you get the proportions correct.

I've got a signature, you can copy-paste it if you like - it's got a bell and a basket and things that make it look good. I'd give it to you if I could, but I borrowed it.
Thank you. That helps to some degree.
Ultimately I would like to have access to anything that would help make (and possibly even texture) basic geometry without having to burden 2d artists too much with 3d or 3d modelers with having to manage "all" of the simple tasks... like doors and chairs, for example.
Both are expected to be able to work within each others field to some degree, but quick and easy (or maybe even quick and dirty) is the key.

Check out either PhotoModeler 3D (which is for general 3D objects) or a program made made a company called BioVirtual that I can't recall the name of offhand (which is geared towards human figures).
Hope that helps.

I havent heard of a program that can make a really good 2d image into a 3d one. I know they have equipment that can scan common objects like peoples heads, chairs, and stuff and make 3d models out of them. the problem with converting a 2 model into a 3d model is that for instance if you convert a front and side view of a head into a 3d model it would just be square, which could work for a table or something. to get it to have the rounded parts you need some coordinates between the 90 degreee parts. tough probelm :(

ZBrush.
ZBrush 2 is out now.
I've never used it, but you basically draw your 2d image, and it converts it to 3d.
I think you have to draw it form a few angles etc.
I don't know if it's really much use for what you are wanting, most people seem to use it to create normal maps for 3d models, or very high poly models.
Animal Crossing on the Gamecube just uses planes for a great deal of its graphics. It all depends on if you are going to have a fixed camera angle and so on.
