Looking for virus database
for a project i've been thinking about, i need a database of computer viruses.. including name, type of virus, exactly what it does, and any other relevant information. i tried the CIAC website, but it is no longer maintained, and doesn't really have what i'm looking for. there was actually a search tool i used to have on windows 3.1 that had such a database, but I can't remember for the life of me what its called. also, any other resources on viruses, how they work, etc. would be appreciated.

What kind of project?
It almost sounds as if you intend to use these viruses for something. Something... not good. Maybe a little extra clarification might be needed to not scare people from helping you ;)

The CIAC website isn't maintained any longer but does have links to currently maintained databases:

Also when using a web search engine look for "virii" to find extra info on viruses.
You can also try to find copies of the old e-magazine "40hex" which has plenty of info on how viruses work. Or try:
www.phrack.org

I think most of the major antivirus retailers maintain virus encyclopaedias. Tried Symantec or McAfee's websites?

the project in question is a game. rest easy, gents. computer based, i want resources on viruses so i can design the enemies. information like behavior, specs, and nicknames are most important of all.
you will be sure to hear more of the actual project in a later post, if i decide its worth pursuing.

thanks for the feedback, everybody. granted, this isn't one of the easiest topics to find good information about.
to answer your question, trapdoor, and maybe help people understand what information i'm looking for, i'll delve a little bit into the concept of this game.
this game will be a monster collection type game, the virii being the monsters. they will be divided up into type, be it worm, trojan, etc. after this, what the virus does will help me work on it's AI, attacks, and further type information.
each virus will be into three classes.. here is an example.
Virus #1: trojan ---> rougue ---> ground.
the playing field will be divided up into terrains, on which certain types might have an advantage. the rougue class, will determine how much it values defense over offense, physical attacks over hacking, etc. all other characteristics are based on the Virus #1 species and Trojan class..
when i have enough information to decide whether or not to actually pursue this project, you'll find out more. if you have any questions, feel free to ask and i will answer them as i can.
