Hey guys! I've been working on an awesome new game idea. Tell me what you think! It's called "Chronicles of the Magi, The Second Age: The Rise and Fall of the Tech Invaders." The game is about futury soldiers trying to exterminate a race of magic users. The game will be either top-down, kinda like Crimsonland, or a FPS mod. The main game mode will be team play in the vein of Team Fortress point control maps, like canalzone2. Please post all questions and comments! I'm really excited about this game!
You should post more info for a more in-depth review, but imho the "crowd" that enjoys futuristic & high-tech scenarios, doesnt usually go for the fantasy stuff, and the reverse is also true.

Also, designing any story around this is murder, because while the hitek faction has spent decades reaching a certain technological plateau, on the fantasy crowd side, any acne-striken kid ala Harry Potter can destroy whole cities without a sweat...

...so, not only is it hard to achive full immersion of the player, but balancing the gameplay, and making it believable is also hard...

These are some of the reasons why Game Designers only select a certain vein of these two for any single game.

Some might argue that in some games and movies there are both fantasy & technological elements, like in Final Fantasy, or Star Wars, but I would argue that one of the 2 veins (fantasy or technology) allways rules the other...

I liked in Babylon 5.. where there was a group of people who were obsessed with using technology to simulate magic..

The name is a mouthful.. too painfully long.

The problem I see here is that to avoid balancing issues, both sides will have similar abilities veiled by different means (the ability to fly at the cost of magic power vs. the power to use hoverboots at the cost of electricity). This will lead to boredom because they sides will be exactly the same. If the sides are too differenet, it will be almost impossible to balance the sides because the two ability types are so rediculously different. I would imagine that a wizard would be able to deflect all sorts of physical and energy wewapons.. while being vulnerable to powerful magic.

Thanks guys! You raise some really good points. I'll have to think about them for a while.

Now come on you other guys! I can see people are reading the thread! I would really like some feedback on this. I love computer games!
I'd have to agree that the name is a bit of a nightmare, in general most people are more likely to respond to a short name, unless your using an extended name for branding purposes where your retaining a previous name in a new game. Warcraft, Starcraft, Doom, Dune II, Halflife. All nice and short.

Your concept could use a little fleshing out, you've only got a very basic idea there. As has been mentioned, combining what are usually two seperate settings can give you some balancing/storyline issues.

Have a look at the Phantasy Star series by Sega. Those were fantastic games, where you really were blending science and fantasy. I mean, technically, the game explained everything as science, since you used "techniques" - but they were just spells by a different name. But the above posters are correct, in that to achieve a real balance, everyone will be basically the same. You'll just be calling it magic for one group, while calling it something else for the other.

Needs a longer name.
Okay I get it guys! :) My titles are kind of long, I guess I'm just that kind of person.

I thought the game idea was neat, but I've decided to go with a different kind of game. Thanks for the input though!
