Here is a song, I'm not a musician, although i have lots of musical hardware and software... My song Most likely background music for a level in one of my games i am working on. you like?
The hitats are a little too trebbily, could use a few supporting pads or strings. Add that and you should have a decent background side-scrolly song :)

Good start, but it could use some more variation. Add an underlying pad or string set as Dreq said, to provide more of a flow between track changes.
I like it :) But maybe repetitive somehow.

But it's well done :) great work.

I invey you justin, i worked hard on my song and everyone jumps to review your song while mine slowly falls off the page ^_~

But yeah, some viaration would be nice, of course its hard to use variation and keep it backgroundy, but it can be done :D.

for variation, Should the bass line be varied, or the bass dru, or the hats, or the light weight beeping noise. I have never been good at adding variation to a song, and still making it sound right. I dont want to loose the feel of the song. Also what do you suggest for an underlaying pad? like long low noises, long high noises, short low, random sounding noises, etc..

dreq, i listend to your song, i liked it alot, did remind me of RPGish music ;)

Something to smooth over the rough edges as far as the pan goes. For example, in the song of mine you just heard, i used reverb and strings to smooth over the sound. As far as variation goes, its hard for me to explain really.. I personally just play notes that I hear in my head..

Ill work on it...

I made the song in about 30 minutes, so its far from complete..

How long did it take you to do your FFshipish song?
About 1 1/2 hours, maby 2.

You need some variation in the bassline or another instrument adding some kind of melody/variation. Maybe follow the rythm with the drums. As a bass player my first reaction was that the bassline was way too repetetive, experiment an use more or less notes here and there. Make a second (or more) version of it and vary betweem them.
