k guys.. thx alot.. i got cakewalk sonar producer edition now :D.. can use garritan's.. i will get it soon! :D
If you're on the market for samples, you have to change your idea of what "Expensive" means. GPO has most of the instruments in a modern orchestra plus Kontakt player (Which means you don't have to go out and buy the full version of Kontakt at like $400). It also comes with a notation program as well as Cubasis.

All that for $250.

Average price for samples is between $500 and $1000. And most of those contain only a few instruments, not an entire orchestra.

GPO is indeed a good deal. It is a great library too. I use it, and I really can't say too many bad things about it.

It does have some limitations, though. They didn't sample a bunch of articulations, and there are a few minor bugs in some samples (which they are working on).

I used to use Soundfont, and GPO is defineately better than any I have been able to find.

On GPO's forums, Mr. Garritan has mentioned a Big Band add on as well as additional percussion.

Just want to warn, though, GPO's price is going to increase soon. The $249 is an introductiry price. So, if you are in that "I'll get it later" mood, you may want to think about that.
how do i use garritan's? is it like soundfonts? ..
I hate how the EDIROL Orchestral Softsynth always gets left out of these conversations involving realistic orchestral samples....

Anyone use it other than myself? I know of one other on this forum....

The sounds when first heard can be quite disconcerting...but when used properly can sound fracking great!

Here is an example of my work using the edirol synth:

Plus you can check out more at www.mp3.com.au/scottbuckley

Check out the www.edirol.com site for details on the thing. The demos available on this site are really crappy, and dont show what this synth can do.

One neato detail that I find nice is the fact that this is a synthesiser, not a sample library. So you dont need to have a massive hard drive or externals to use it...I believe it only takes up about 200mb. It plugs into any sequencer able to take VST or DXi, so Sonar, or Cubase, or Logic can live with it.

I know there are plenty of people out there who despise this product, but I love it to bits. It costs around AUD$800 (ie Australian Dollars...)...unfamiliar with the pricing elsewhere....

I have GPO (Garritan Personal Orchestra).

It was worth every penny. I strongly suggest you get it.

I was the first one to get it, actually. Heh... my dad ordered it from Gary Garritan himself 4 months before Christmas, and 5 months before GPO hit the shelves of stores. ^^

Yes GPO is very high quality. Very very very high quality. It has real sampled sounds, so you're getting the..... bang for your buck....I think.

Uh.. I've never heard of the "Edirol Orchestral Softsynth". A google search revelead not even two pages of search results for that. There's an "Edirol Orchestral" plugin, but it's not a synthesizer. I believe you have the wrong information or the wrong translation. Realistic orchestral sounds cannot be synthesized with any current technology. Even the best physical modeling synthesizers sound horribly fake when compared side by side to budget orchestral samples.

We use Garritan on our ProToolsHD system as an RTAS plugin and it seriously rocks.

The problem I face with more complex systems (like GigaStudio) is that the amount of work required while composing to make the production sound better than what you can do with Garritan is far too much.

I rather make alot of very good quality music than a little of slightly better-than-very good quality.

I also go by the principle that if your ear is good enough to hear what makes a piece sound "synth" then your a good enough musician to use the tools at hand to remove that "negative" aspect of the production. (This used to involve avoiding most instruments in the orchestral sample libraries but with GPO you can use most instruments but you'll have to fiddle with the panning, mix and ambience or it gets too clear and defined to be "for real")
