the maths?
ok i think ill get the black art of 3d game programming, unless anyone can recommend a book as good as this without extremely outdated code?
Well, Tricks of the Windows Game Programming Gurus also covers matrices, and it''s much more current. It also has a review of trig and vectors in the back. I''m not sure how good all the explanations are -- I skipped over that part because I learned it all long ago -- but I''d imagine it''s just as good as what you''ll find in Black Art, since it''s the same author.
Anonymous: I always wondered why so many people call it "maths" too. It just doesn''t sound right...

Sorry d00d, are you the guy who calls Mathematics, Mathematic?

You Americans may call mathematics math, but I, all of britain, all of australia, all of new zealand, and all other English speaking countries other than yourself call it maths. And it is plural anyway because maths is many things, eg arithmetic, geometry, calculus, algebra etc.

Well I do live in the US and it''s one hell of a lot more screwed up than you seem to think, Anonymous. Arguing this will get nowhere so I''ll cut off here. Someone want to close this thread?

now, can anyone recommend any of these books? :
3D Graphics Programming: Games and Beyond
3D Computer Games Technology: Volume I: Real-Time Rendering and Software
Real-Time Rendering
Black Art of 3d Game Programming
which one of them would be the best to learn the maths from? (and get some other skills too )

Someone gave "advice" to you to not try and learn the math before you are 16... To put it politely, this is poor advice. If you have the will and the drive to learn trigonometry when you are 12 years old, by all means do so. Some people fail to realize that the younger you are the more your brain is like a sponge. That is why young kids that live in multi-lingual neighborhoods can pick up extra languages very quickly. But to make a long post short. Go for it.

If you don''t know trig, none of those will help at all. In fact, if you don''t know trig, I don''t know of any books that will help you, and I suggest you wait till you learn it in school or try to learn it on your own with some textbook. The thing about trig is that it really requires a decent sized paradigm shift and is helpful to have a teacher to ask questions, not to mention that algebra 2 is a prerequisit.
For just math, (it''s not a CS book) I suggest the book Quaternions and Rotation Sequences: A Primer with Application to Orbits, Aearospace, and Virtual Reality by Jack Kuipers. It has the most indepth material I have seen on rotational sequences (matrices and quaternions) and also applications of math to computer graphics. It, of course, assumes trig knowledge.
Before I came to these boards, I have never heard or seen the word ''maths''. It is not in my dictionary either...math is both singular and plural.
