Hello Everyone: It was an ugly week for first-person shooters as both Quake: Team Fortress and Half-Life were voted off the hard drive by the respondents to the August Game AI Poll. The Sims also got the boot (it tied with Half-Life and I really didn''t have any criteria for keeping one over the other). Now we''re down to some pretty tough choices: - Dark Reign/Dark Reign II - Thief/Thief II - Creatures - Enemy Nations - Alpha Centauri If you wanna vote for who''ll be kicked off the hard drive this week, the URL is below..... -- Steven Woodcock From the High Mountains of Colorado http://www.gameai.com

Creatures talked AI but there was always an imbalance in the activities. Creatures should have gone before the Sims. It should go now. With Thief, trying to do human-seeming AI is always tougher because there''s always a way to trip it up. I''m playing Deus Ex now and that has solid AI but you know there are limits to human simulation.

I''ve not really played Thief or Thief II, myself, but I''d heard from several that they were both quite good. What was it about them that disappointed you?

In thief 2 in normal difficulty. I sat in full light shooting arrows at 2 guards for 5 minutes. (48 broad heads!) Those 2 never even saw me.. They screamed that "We are going to find you!" They never did.. The AI is dumb, period. They had bows.. Never fired back.

Fluke? It happened every time I played.

i am playing thief ii right now and i have not had a problem like galileo. i find the ai to be frustratingly persistant at points. there are some problems, like they could probably smell you they are so close, and yet they dont see you.

deus ex also has some problems...the ai is not as myopic as thief...actually they seem quite adept when it comes to seeing you crouched in the darkest of corners. and when you start shooting at them i think the lose about 100 iq points. they go running around in circles, bumnping into one another, and if you hurt them enough, they drop there gun are run away blindly. they will run right past you completely oblivious to you.

half life had great ai, in my opinion. descent had probably the best ive played against though. tough bastards they were.

those are just my thoughts
