I would recommend Wings

Its open source(not shareware) and has a really fast work flow.
Blender. It is open source and has much fuller feature set than Wings. Wings is just a a modeler while Blender is a full feature 3d application, animation, particles, etc. Blender also has a much more active community that is constantly creating new plugins.
