Um... I am using X on a 233mhz. It has a 5 gb drive split into 2 partitions, so really its X on a 233mhz with a 2.5 gig partition on 96 megs of ram. It works decently if you know what to load and what not to load.

I''m using fluxbox as the window manager, you can kiss kde and gnome good bye with these specs. For apps I''m using gaim, xchat, firefox, thunderbird, and gkrellm.

I think people were running X on systems far slower than 233MHz. Just get a more lightweight window manager, and use the command prompt whenever possible.

I''d ditch X for free.. console or bust, baby! ... seriously, though, I don''t like the X Windowing System all that much, so I''d definitely ditch it. I think that console mode works well enough, but that might be because I only use linux on my right and left hand boxen, but not my primary one. Meh, who knows, I''m rambling on.

Would you ditch X if your computer only had a 233 Mhz Pentium with a slow 2GB hard drive? Because that''s what I''ve got, and though I want to upgrade, I can''t right this moment. Still, I program on this computer a lot, and a windowing system comes in handy at times.

Would you ditch X if you were in my shoes?

No, I''d simply use a distro that can handle it. Using Micro-X or something like that. Grab yourself a copy of Damn Small Linux which is intended to run from a 50MB business card CD and install it on your HD. This will do wonders for your system.

Bash is your friend. The only reason I''ve X on my 800 MHz is firebird.

... and there ya go. I uninstalled X. But can anyone recommend a decent little paint program for console? That''s all I need, and then I''ll be set.
